Certification Programs

All Lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid programs are taught using American Red Cross standards.

LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATION COURSE
 
This course will provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to recognize and eliminate common aquatic hazards, accidents and injuries. Participants must be at least 15 years of age and have excellent swimming skills. Includes training and certification in lifeguarding, first aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Class space is limited. Payment is required to reserve a spot in the class. Paying over the phone is an option at (707) 822-6801 or in person. 
Please be prepared to participate in a swimming pre-test.

LIFEGUARD RECERTIFICATION
Must have current lifeguard certification or expired--at the latest, a month after it expires. There is a 30 day grace period after certification expires. You will be sent blended learning to finish before the class. Includes lifeguard/first aid/CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR COURSE (WSI)
This American Red Cross program is for those interested in teaching basic swimming classes.  The course includes methods of teaching swimming to infants and preschoolers, the Learn to Swim Program, Community Water Safety and those meeting the criteria for Safety Training for Swim Coaches.  This course DOES NOT provide certification to teach Lifeguard Training. 
This is a blended learning course. Classroom content will be online. 
Must be at least 16 years old, possess excellent swimming skills and pass the precourse test.

NAUI SCUBA DIVER COURSE

The NAUI SCUBA Diver Course is a six week course of instruction in the use of open circuit SCUBA and ocean skills and an the emphasis on diving the North Coast. Academic subjects are presented on Saturdays at the Alpha Dive Locker classroom in Finnetown, and confined water (pool) training is held on Monday nights at the Arcata Community Pool. The course closes with an open water dive experience over a weekend. Students must provide a set of personal dive equipment to successfully complete the course. Equipment requirements are discussed in detail at the conclusion of Pre-SCUBA. Student tuition includes use of SCUBA equipment (for confined and open dives), air fills, and a certification card. This course meets current NAUI standards.

Students may register for SCUBA, but must attend and pass the Pre-Scuba Class.
Fees: $11.00 drop-in fee
*Pre-SCUBA is an evaluation of potential students, made prior to the opening of a NAUI SCUBA diver class. Candidates are under no obligation to enroll in the current class or any class once this process is completed. Pre-SCUBA may be taken ahead of time for a future class. Pre-SCUBA may be repeated as neccessary until an individual qualifies for the class. Two of the three events must be successfully completed for eligibility to enroll in a class. At the conclusion of Pre-SCUBA, candidates are briefed on student equipment requirements and complete a medical pre-screening.

NAUI RESCUE SCUBA DIVER COURSE

The NAUI SCUBA Rescue Diver Course is a four week course leading to certification as a Rescue Diver. The course consists of four confined water sessions and a half day in-water rescue test. Academics include how to respond to dive maladies, immediate action when a diving emergency occurs, and oxygen administration. Students must provide a complete set of personal dive equipment. This class is demanding, but graduates are qualified to perform self-rescue and render assistance to victims of dive accidents. Minimum age:18

Prerequisites: Proof of NAUI SCUBA Diver certification or equilavent, pass 2 of 3 events in Pre-Rescue, proof of current Adult CPR and First Aid, and complete medical screening.

NAUI HISTORICAL DIVER

The NAUI Historical Diver Specialty course is a brand new offering for SCUBA certified and non-SCUBA certified persons wanting to learn to dive with hose supplied dive helmets an masks from all eras. This is a three week course. Students are taught to practice basic skills such as setting up the dive station, dressing the diver, tending the diver and dive skills such as walking upright on the bottom as well as out of air emergencies. There are two or more pool sessions and a weekend of diving in Humboldt Bay. Students must provide their own complete wetsuit and a pair of rubber boots for walking on uneven bottom. Minimum age:18

CPR/AED FOR THE PROFESSIONAL RESCUER

This course is the highest level of CPR offered and is designed for first responders and healthcare professionals to help care for victims in the event of an emergency.  The course contents include recognizing an emergency, legal obligations, preventing disease transmission, working with different breathing barriers for resuscitiation, and learning how to care for breathing and cardiac emergencies.  Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will receive a certificate in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.

ADULT & PEDIATRIC CPR/AED

This five-hour course is designed to focus on the three levels of CPR and AED.  Course contents include how to recognize an emergency, preventing disease transmission, and learning to care for breathing and cardiac emergencies for adults, children and infants. Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will receive a certification in Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED.  Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will receive a certification in First Aid and Adult CPR/AED.

FIRST AID WITH ADULT CPR/AED


The purpose of this five hour course is to give individuals in the workplace the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide basic care for injuries and sudden illness until advanced medical personnel arrive. The course contents include how to recognize an emergency, learning to care for breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, and dealing with sudden illnesses, wounds, and injuries to muscles, bones, and joints.
